"Shoot during golden hour" is the safari photography equivalent of "eat your vegetables." Technically correct, universally repeated, and almost useless without someone actually telling you what to do with the hour you've got.
That 5:30 AM game drive gives you a real but narrow window, and here's the part nobody mentions: the first fifteen minutes after the vehicle actually stops, once the dust settles and the animals decide you're not a threat, tend to outperform the other seventy-five minutes combined. Bring a faster shutter speed than feels necessary. A soft, blurry lion at 1/60th isn't a keepsake, it's a photo you'll delete on the flight home and regret.
The Nile boat safari fixes something you probably didn't realize was broken. Every game-drive photo gets shot from up high looking down, which shrinks even genuinely massive animals. Get down to water level instead. A hippo at eye level reads as an entirely different animal, closer, considerably less thrilled about your presence, and far more compelling because of it. The falls do something clever from the water too, building gradually instead of appearing all at once: mist first, then the sound, then the whole thing.
If your tent came with the private deck, use it for more than sundowners. It's the one spot you get access to every single evening, which means you can actually wait out a specific kind of sky instead of settling for whatever one evening happens to hand you.
And midday? Just let it go. The light directly overhead is flat and unkind to literally everything, animal or otherwise, and no amount of skill fixes physics. Go float in the elephant-shaped pool instead. The light, and the photos, come back later.
