Below Murchison Falls, the Nile stops behaving like the river most people picture. It widens, slows, and settles into something closer to a lake, calm enough that a boat's engine barely registers with the wildlife working its banks.
The hippos announce themselves before they're seen, a low grunting carried flat across open water, present well before a single shape breaks the surface. This stretch holds one of the densest hippo populations found anywhere on the continent, and a single crossing can put a boat within sight of dozens at once. Nile crocodiles hold the banks in matching numbers, laid out in the sun with a stillness so complete they're easy to mistake for driftwood until a guide points one out.
Waterbirds work the shallows the whole way, and the falls stay visible for most of the crossing, close enough by the end that mist reaches the boat before the sound of the water has finished explaining itself.
Morning departures generally find the calmest water and the most active wildlife, before the day's heat settles over everything and slows it down. A good guide paces the approach to the falls so the boat spends real time within sight of the drop rather than simply passing beneath it, since that stretch is usually what stays with a guest longest.
